Background of the Study

Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) refers to the integration of environmental considerations into supply chain management practices, focusing on sustainability, resource efficiency, and the reduction of environmental impact throughout the supply chain. Nestlé Nigeria, as part of the global Nestlé Group, has been committed to sustainable development and environmentally responsible practices, particularly in areas such as sourcing raw materials, production processes, packaging, and distribution. In Sokoto State, where agricultural activities play a significant role in the economy, Nestlé Nigeria sources several raw materials that have both environmental and economic implications.

This study focuses on the GSCM practices adopted by Nestlé Nigeria in Sokoto State, evaluating how these practices contribute to both sustainability goals and operational efficiency. The food and beverage industry, in particular, faces pressures to adopt environmentally friendly practices due to increasing consumer awareness, regulatory pressures, and the need to address climate change. By examining Nestlé’s approach to GSCM, this study will provide insights into how green practices can be effectively integrated into supply chains, helping to achieve both economic and environmental objectives.

Statement of the Problem

Nestlé Nigeria has made substantial progress in integrating sustainability into its operations, but challenges remain in fully adopting green supply chain practices, especially in regions like Sokoto State where environmental concerns such as deforestation, water use, and waste management are prevalent. The effectiveness of these GSCM practices, particularly in reducing environmental impact and improving the company’s supply chain efficiency, has not been adequately assessed. This study will examine Nestlé Nigeria’s GSCM practices in Sokoto State, identifying successes and challenges in their implementation.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of green supply chain management practices at Nestlé Nigeria, Sokoto State.

2. To assess the impact of GSCM on environmental sustainability in the supply chain of Nestlé Nigeria, Sokoto State.

3. To identify challenges in implementing GSCM practices in Nestlé Nigeria’s operations in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

1. How effective are the green supply chain management practices at Nestlé Nigeria, Sokoto State?

2. What is the impact of GSCM on environmental sustainability in Nestlé Nigeria’s operations in Sokoto State?

3. What challenges does Nestlé Nigeria face in implementing green supply chain management practices in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Green supply chain management practices do not significantly improve environmental sustainability at Nestlé Nigeria, Sokoto State.

2. There is no significant relationship between GSCM practices and operational efficiency in Nestlé Nigeria, Sokoto State.

3. Challenges in implementing GSCM practices do not significantly hinder the adoption of sustainable practices at Nestlé Nigeria, Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the green supply chain management practices at Nestlé Nigeria’s operations in Sokoto State, evaluating environmental impact, efficiency, and implementation challenges. Limitations may include access to proprietary supply chain data and potential biases in reporting environmental performance.

Definitions of Terms

• Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM): The integration of environmentally sustainable practices into supply chain management, focusing on reducing environmental impact.

• Environmental Sustainability: The ability to maintain and improve environmental health by minimizing the depletion of natural resources and reducing pollution.

• Supply Chain Efficiency: The ability of a supply chain to deliver goods and services in a timely, cost-effective, and resource-efficient manner.
